A user opens Runway in the web app, chooses a model, App, Agent or Workflow, then enters a prompt and uploads supported reference media when needed. Runway generates an image, video or audio result that can be reviewed, iterated, organized in a project and exported or shared.
What is Runway?
Runway is a web-based AI creative platform for generating, editing and transforming video, images and audio. Its main purpose is to help creators move from an idea, reference image or piece of footage to a usable media asset through generative models and task-specific tools.
The platform is aimed at filmmakers, video creators, designers, marketers, agencies, production studios, educators and creative teams. It is also available through a separate developer API for applications that need programmatic media generation. Unlike a general-purpose chatbot, Runway is organized around media creation workflows, projects and generation credits.
What can Runway do?
Generate and animate video
Runway supports text-to-video and image-to-video workflows. A user can describe a scene, provide an image as a visual starting point, and iterate on short generated clips. Gen-4.5 supports text-to-video and image-to-video on the web, while other available models support different combinations of generation, editing and transformation features.
These tools are useful for concept development, storyboards, previsualization, social content, advertising assets and visual prototypes. They are not a replacement for every part of a conventional production pipeline: outputs still require selection, iteration and often additional editing.
Edit and transform existing footage
Runway also works with uploaded video. Its AI-assisted editing capabilities include in-context transformations, stylization, video-to-video workflows, keyframe-oriented changes and upscaling. This makes the platform relevant when the starting material already exists and the goal is to alter its look, content or presentation rather than generate an entire sequence from nothing.
Create and modify images
Users can generate images from prompts and edit images using references. Image tools support visual development, product imagery, advertising concepts and variations of an existing design. Creative Apps provide more focused operations, including product shots, image variations and related production tasks.
Animate characters and create audio
Runway includes performance-based character tools such as Act-Two and Runway Characters. These workflows use reference imagery and performance inputs to create character animation.
The platform also includes generative audio capabilities for speech, voiceovers, music and sound effects. This can help assemble supporting audio for a video project, although the available model and generation options depend on the product surface and account.
How a typical Runway workflow works
- Choose a model, App, Agent or Workflow in the web application.
- Enter a prompt and upload reference images, video, audio or performance material when the selected task supports it.
- Generate one or more results and compare variations.
- Refine the prompt or inputs, then repeat the process as needed.
- Organize results in projects and sessions before downloading, sharing or using them in a wider production workflow.
For recurring operations, Runway's node-based Workflows allow users to connect creative steps without writing code. The Agent provides another way to work with creative tasks, while the developer API is intended for programmatic access rather than ordinary interactive use.
Plans, credits and access
Runway has a Free plan with 125 one-time credits and 5 GB of storage. Free generations include a Runway watermark, and free users cannot purchase additional credits. The selection of models available on the Free plan can change over time.
Paid access uses a subscription and monthly credits. Standard starts at $12 per month when billed annually, or $15 per month with monthly billing. Pro is listed at $28 per month annually or $35 per month monthly, while Max is listed at $76 per month annually or $95 per month monthly. The plans provide different credit amounts, storage, model access and collaboration or production features. Enterprise pricing is customized.
Credit consumption varies by model, duration, resolution and output format. Standard includes 625 credits per month, Pro includes 2,250 and Max includes 9,500. Standard and Pro credits generally do not roll over, while Max permits up to one month of rollover. Because video generation often requires multiple attempts, the practical cost depends on how frequently a user iterates.
Platforms and collaboration
Runway is primarily a cloud service accessed through its web application. Official iOS and Android apps are also available. The web product supports projects, sharing, collaboration and, on eligible plans, Brand Kits and other team-oriented features. Enterprise capabilities include organization workspaces, administrative controls, role permissions, analytics and single sign-on.
Runway also documents MCP support and offers a separate developer API. These options matter when a team wants to connect media generation to an application or a broader creative workflow, but they do not turn Runway into a general-purpose automation platform for every business process.
Who is Runway best for?
- Filmmakers and video creators: Useful for ideation, previsualization, generated shots, footage transformation and supporting audio.
- Marketing and advertising teams: Useful for producing concept visuals, product imagery, social clips and variations for campaigns.
- Designers and agencies: Useful for rapid visual exploration and client-facing prototypes.
- Production teams: More suitable when collaboration, projects, workflow repeatability and administrative controls matter.
- Developers: The API and MCP support provide options for integrating selected media-generation tasks into software workflows.
Runway is less suitable for users who need unlimited low-cost rendering, local or offline processing, or a full conventional desktop video editor without usage-based generation limits. It is also not primarily a document, research, coding or general productivity tool.
Limitations and data considerations
The principal operational limitation is credit-based usage. Generation quality and consistency can vary, and producing a satisfactory clip may require several attempts. Model access differs by plan, account and product surface, so the Free or Standard experience should not be treated as access to the entire Runway model catalog.
Runway's consumer privacy policy describes collection of account information, prompts, uploaded and generated media, metadata and certain biometric data used for requested voice or face features. It may disclose information to vendors, analytics and advertising partners, affiliates, payment processors and other parties described in the policy. Users can configure some assets and projects as private or shareable.
The reviewed consumer materials do not reduce content-training practices to one universal rule for every plan. Runway states that third-party model providers used for enterprise processing are contractually committed not to train on enterprise Customer Content, but organizations should review the applicable plan terms and customer agreements before uploading sensitive material.
Bottom line
Runway is a broad generative-media workspace centered on video, with meaningful image, audio, character and workflow capabilities around it. Its strongest use is rapid visual production and iteration in the cloud, especially when a team wants generation, editing, project organization and collaboration in one environment. The trade-offs are recurring credit costs, changing model availability, variable outputs and the need to review privacy and enterprise terms for sensitive content.
